Sep. 7: A have-you-ever meme

Have you ever...

  1. Gone on a blind date? Yes. I was working the phones in the dorm one Saturday night and some guy called asking if there were any girls hanging out in the lobby that he could talk to. What a loser! He wouldn’t hang up so we chatted for a while and he finally asked me out. I think we went to a movie after I got off work. I don’t remember it being especially painful but we didn’t hit it off, either. We never went out again.
  2. Skipped school? I still have nightmares about how often I skipped school.
  3. Watched someone die? No.
  4. Been on a plane? Yup.
  5. Been on the opposite side of your country? Yes; Florida.
  6. Swam in the ocean? The ocean along the Oregon coast is cold but when I was younger it didn’t bother me. I loved the Pacific while visiting Hawaii. And the Caribbean was the loveliest of all.
  7. Had your booze taken away by the cops? No.
  8. Lettered in a high school sport? This question made me laugh very, very hard. And then I cried.
  9. Cried yourself to sleep? God, yes.
  10. Played cops and robbers? Probably.
  11. Sung karaoke? Nope, but I would with the right people.
  12. Paid for a meal with coins only? My friend Deanna and I ordered a pizza in high school and paid for it with rolls of pennies.
  13. Done something you told yourself you wouldn’t? What, are these questions just to make me feel like crap?
  14. Cheated on an exam? I cheated on quizzes in World Religions often; it was hard not to in that amphitheater and besides, that girl in front of me always knew the answers.
  15. Made prank phone calls? Oh, maybe a few...
  16. Laughed until some sort of beverage came out of your nose? Ouch, yes.
  17. Caught a snowflake on your tongue? Yes.
  18. Written a letter to Santa Claus? Yes.
  19. Watched the sun rise with someone you care about? Yes.
  20. Been kissed under the mistletoe? Yes.
  21. Been arrested? Are you kidding? Not even close.
  22. Gone ice skating? Yes. I even took an ice skating class in college to satisfy one of my two phys ed requirements.
  23. Been skinny dipping outdoors? Does a hot tub count?
  24. Had a nickname? Yes.
  25. Been on TV? Yes, besides being in an audience for some local talk shows in the 80s, Victor and I were on The Tonight Show in 1997. Several actors sat right in front of us, and during Jay Leno’s monologue the camera went to them and we were on screen very visibly during their schtick. Want our autographs?

  1. 1. Gone on a blind date? Yes, if Match.com dates count as blind.

    2. Skipped school? I did a few “Ferris Buhlers” in my high school years.

    3. Watched someone die? No. I did have the unfortunate experience of watching my dog die in my arms, though.

    4. Been on a plane? Yes.

    5. Been on the opposite side of your country? Yes; Florida, New York, DC, Boston.

    6. Swam in the ocean? Yes. San Diego, Oregon coast (this was in 1978; I just thawed out last week), Cabo Pulmo, BCS.

    7. Had your booze taken away by the cops? No.

    8. Lettered in a high school sport? Yes, softball and hockey. No, PAA didn’t have a hockey team, but Mr. Davies gave myself and a few other puckheads hockey letters anyway because we played on our own time. Then my letterman’s jacket blew out of the back of a truck when my dad was moving a bunch of my stuff back home from WWC one summer. Man, I miss that jacket to this day!

    9. Cried yourself to sleep? It’s been a few years now…

    10. Played cops and robbers? Yes, but I preferred playing Scumbags and Public Defenders instead.

    11. Sung karaoke? Oh yeah! But, liquefied reduction of my inhibitions is required first.

    12. Paid for a meal with coins only? Sure.

    13. Done something you told yourself you wouldn’t? What, are these questions just to make me feel like crap? (dk: Jen’s answer works for me as well)

    14. Cheated on an exam? No, never. Maybe I could have bumped my GPA up a peg or two…

    15. Made prank phone calls? I once “gave” some poor little old lady a free trip to Vegas, posing as a radio show host! Then, of course, college was prank call heaven, thanks to The Mask.

    16. Laughed until some sort of beverage came out of your nose? Every time I read Jen’s blog, like on Saturday, fer instance.

    17. Caught a snowflake on your tongue? Yes.

    18. Written a letter to Santa Claus? No, I just text message him.

    19. Watched the sun rise with someone you care about? Yes.

    20. Been kissed under the mistletoe? Yes.

    21. Been arrested? Nope.

    22. Gone ice skating? Well, I played hockey for a bunch of years, but I don’t think the Canucks I played with would call my thrashing about on the ice “skating.”

    23. Been skinny dipping outdoors? Sure, lotsa times.

    24. Had a nickname? Dano, Steely Dan (via Ben Cawthra), Dan-Dan (think JFK’s kid), “Danny Kaempff” (Bill Ward’s wife Beth calls me this, always using both names and calling me “Danny.” She’s the only one I let get away with that, cause she’s so darn sweet!)

    25. Been on TV? Yes, lotsa times. Once was interviewed by right-wing, douchebag supreme Lars Larson for KPTV 12 news when my school bus drivers were threatening to unionize and go on strike. I basically said “no comment.” (I’ve always thought it funny how a guy who’s supposedly such a right-wing hot shot was so worried about the common man and supporting their unionizing efforts…) Then, there was the “Ramblin’ Rod cartoon show that I was on several times. Never won the “Smile Contest,” though. Guess my smile kinda sucks, at least according to Ramblin’ Rod.

  3. 1. Gone on a blind date? I can't remember, which probably means no.

    2. Skipped school? Oh yes. As my father used to say, "Don't let your school work interfere with your education." With that kind of encouragement...

    3. Watched someone die? No.

    4. Been on a plane? Still love to fly, even post 9/11.

    5. Been on the opposite side of your country? Yes--Florida (I try to forget), NYC (many times, happily), and DC (once). On the Canadian side, Nova Scotia, eh?!

    7. Had your booze taken away by the cops? No.

    8. Lettered in a high school sport? Not even close.

    9. Cried yourself to sleep? No, I cry, then sleep. The line stays pretty clear for me. I have wished to, weirdly, but it just hasn't worked out that way.

    10. Played cops and robbers? No. Usually played doctor (!) or knights (swords). Never the two together, thankfully.

    11. Sung karaoke? Oh yes, quite pathetically. Thankfully, the memories are foggy and faded at this point.

    13. Done something you told yourself you wouldn’t? How many times? Many, many.

    14. Cheated on an exam? Not an exam, per se, but these reading comp thingys in seventh grade. Got caught, prayed with (kid you not), the whole nine yards. Never again. But people did cheat off me later, in freshman college French. I took it as a compliment, oddly.

    15. Made prank phone calls? I think Jen and I might have made a few of these together...

    18. Written a letter to Santa Claus? No.

    19. Watched the sun rise with someone you care about? Yes.

    20. Been kissed under the mistletoe? Yes.

    21. Been arrested? The X did... speeding outside The Dalles in college. I had the joy of getting him out of jail, really. Might have been a sign...

    22. Gone ice skating? Used to skate during recess in elementary school... makes me feel old and from the prairies...

    23. Been skinny dipping outdoors? Yes, hot tubs count!

    24. Had a nickname? Yes.

    25. Been on TV? Not that I know of, thankfully. I am very un-natural on camera. Not pretty.
