Day 4, Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving Day):

We weren’t sure how many stores and restaurants would be open but it turned out that Thursday was nearly as busy as the other weekdays, at least in our part of the city. After checking out of the hotel we drove up to Alamo Square to get some pictures at Postcard Row. The sky wasn’t clear enough to get a great view of the city behind the Victorian homes, but it was still picturesque. Again, Katie took some nice pictures. She and Jack wanted to play in the Alamo Square playground, but it looked like it was for younger children so we played mean parents and shoved them back into the car.

From there we headed to the Golden Gate Bridge Visitors Center. The gift shop was closed, but otherwise the area was crowded like any other day. We took a bunch of pictures and also walked a little on the bridge. The kids enjoyed it. Neither Vic nor I were looking forward to leaving, and we kinda stretched out our stay at the visitors center, just dawdling and enjoying the beautiful views.

We got back in the car and drove across the bridge for the last time. We were planning to stop at the viewpoint on the other side but it was too foggy to see the city well, so we continued on to Sausalito. We explored there some, shopped, and enjoyed a relatively crowd-free time. Sausalito reminds me so much of some Oregon Coast towns—I love it, but it’s such a different experience from being in San Francisco itself.

We stopped in Vallejo to eat at Denny’s, one of the few restaurants open outside of the city. What a disappointing Thanksgiving dinner! The drive home was long and boring but we filled the time watching movies, listening to Christmas CDs, and changing the fake British bitchy accent into a friendlier Croatian accent (which also changed all the text into Croatian and made getting it back to English a bit challenging).

It was an excellent trip, full of memories that I think our family will talk about for years to come. We already can’t wait to go back.

  1. You do such an awesome job of travel journaling. I love hearing about what you do on vacations. It's like I'm right there with you. Do you write it down as you go? My memory is so bad I'd never remember everything. Or is it the alcohol? Hmmmm.

  3. Thanks, Lori... I usually try to get the facts down as they happen and then spend a few days after the trip filling in the gaps. And since most of our family vacations aren't too fogged by alcohol, I'm able to remember a lot. You should try that sometime. :)

  4. Why? ;)

(Unless your mom is still reading and then...duh...Kath and I never drink in SF. Why would we 'fog' the memories???)
