Portland’s been named the unhappiest city in America by Business Week.
To get a sense of where the pain points are greatest, BusinessWeek.com came up with a list of the 20 unhappiest cities. These are major cities that were ranked based on their rates of suicide, depression, divorce, unemployment, job loss, population loss, crime, amount of green space, and cloudy days. We gave most emphasis to suicide and depression rates, crime, and economic factors. The city with the highest overall score in our index was Portland, the beautiful Oregon city that also has very high depression and suicide rates.
Here’s the article.
And here’s their complete list of unhappy cities:
- Portland, Oregon
- St. Louis, Missouri
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- Detroit, Michigan
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Jacksonville, Florida
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee
- Cincinnati, Ohio
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin
- Sacramento, California
- Kansas City, Missouri
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Memphis, Tennessee
- Indianapolis City, Indiana
- Louisville, Kentucky
- Tucson, Arizona
- Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Seattle, Washington
I’m so depressed over this news. If it hadn’t been such a beautiful, non-cloudy day today I would totally get a divorce and commit a crime.
Don't worry, it's all a ruse, perpetrated by those who want to keep Portland's population growth to a minimum.
ReplyDeleteSo, instead of "keep Portland weird!" we should be chanting "keep Portland suicidal!" ???
ReplyDeleteI'm OK with that.
That is pretty depressing. I'm surprised none of MA is on that list. I don't really love living here, gotta say.
ReplyDeleteJen E ~ It's funny, because most people who live in the Pacific Northwest love it IN SPITE of its frequent grey skies. People here are friendly, the city is well-maintained, and the whole area west of the Cascades is beautiful. I think the study is saying the (supposed) depression is because of the economy, unemployment, etc. and that may be true, but it's not something that would be immediately evident to visitors (IMO).
ReplyDeleteNot having been to many of the cities on their list, I can't say how they compare. Going by reputations in general, it wasn't surprising to see some on the list, though. :)
